Week 1 - Getting Started with FOSS and GIT Community

Hello Folks,

Firstly, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Tanushree Tumane and I am a Computer Science Engineer from India, graduated this year [September 2018]. My interests are basically in both Frontend as well as Backend coding. My preferable languages are Java, C, C++, Php, XAML, C#, Javascript etc.. I was a former Full Stack Developer intern at DataPhi Labs Bangalore.

What is Outreachy?

Outreachy provides three-month internships to work in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Interns are paid a stipend of $5,500 and have a $500 travel stipend available to them. Outreachy internship projects may include programming, user experience, documentation, illustration and graphical design, or data science. Interns often find employment after their internship with Outreachy sponsors or in jobs that use the skills they learned during their internship.Outreachy internships are open to applicants around the world. Interns work remotely with mentors from FOSS communities.

Outreachy is a great community offering internships to the underrepresented groups all around the world by working remotely and this motivated me to apply for it.

  • I was excited about working as an intern with GIT.
  • Exposure to FOSS and GIT community.
  • Working with such experienced mentors.
  • Getting to learn some interesting stuff related to coding.
  • Learn new Skills.

Being an enthusiast Open Source Software developer, I had applied for the Outreachy Program for Women 2018. I was extremely happy when the much awaited results of Outreachy Program came out and I was elated to see my name selected as a GIT intern. I have no words to express my happiness for being selected for the GIT 2018 internship.

As a Computer Science Engineer and Software Developer "GIT" is the most frequent software which I come across while working on any project, as Version Control is the basis of maintaining the code well and with ease.

And "git-bisect" was a project which I was interested to put hands into.

I am glad to inform that I will be working on "Improve git bisect" project under the guidance of mentors: Christian Couder and Johannes Schindelin who helped me throughout my contribution to git and they are great mentors to work with, which sounds my internship got to be quite interesting.

Looking forward to a great internship …!!
